Abdur-Razzaq and James Shabazz, was a longtime associate and friend of Malcolm X and served as his close aide and chief secretary in the last year of Malcolm X's life. Vegan Sushi

Yamroom roll

prep time: 15 minutes | cooking time: however long rice takes + 10 m | makes 4 rolls

Sweet yams and salty earthy mushrooms make this roll an absolute must for any sushi party worth it's weight in wasabi. Use our sushi tips to ensure perfect rolls.

Equipment:
Bamboo sushi rolling mat
Really sharp serrated knife
Rice cooker or pot for rice
Large preferabely glass bowl to cool rice down in
Small saute pan
Tongs, if you are going to be roasting the nori

Ingredients
For the rice
1 cup sushi rice made with 1 1/4 cup H20, prepared according to package directions
About 2 Tablespoons Rice vinegar (do not use regular or any other kind!)
1 teaspoon sugar

4 sheets nori*

For the filling
1 small peeled Japanese or Korean yam (or sweet potato), chopped & boiled till tender
4-5 shitaki mushrooms (dried or fresh), steamed till tender with a dash or shoyu or mirin cooking wine, and sliced into strips
1/2 tsp sesame oil

Directions
For the rice

Prepare rice according to package instructions. It should be something like 1 1/4 cup H20 to 1 cup rice. Cook till rice is tender but firm, even a little dry.

Empty hot rice into a large glass bowl. Sprinkle with about rice vinegar and 1 sugar. Fold rice gently with a large spoon or rice paddle. Rice should be moist and have a mild vinegar flavor. Cover with plastic wrap. When rice is slightly warmer than room temperature it's ready to work with.

For the filling
Mash steamed yam with sesame oil. Layer with mushrooms & roll away!

*If you like, use a pair of tongs to roast the nori sheets over the oven flame for 2-3 seconds.

Vegan Soy Ice Cream

prep time: 5-10 minutes | cooking time: 25 minutes freezing time | makes 3 cups of vegan ice cream

This vegan soy ice cream recipe is easy to make, infinitely customizable, and has a luxuriously creamy texture.
It was developed by the head chef at Goodbaker Gourmet, where we make the world's best organic vegan baking mixes. We wanted something to enjoy with our vegan cake and cookie mixes...

Equipment: - Blender or food processor
- Ice cream machine (the kind with the tub you chill in the freezer works fine, and they cost less than $50)

Ingredients
1 tetra box firm silken tofu (like Mori-Nu) -or- 8 ounces soy yogurt
Between 3/4 to 1 cup plain soy milk
1/3 cup maple syrup or brown rice syrup (or a combination)
2 tsp vanilla

Directions
Combine all 4 main ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until thoroughly combined and smooth. Blend in any desired flavoring ingredients (see below). Pour into your ice cream machine, and freeze following the manufacturer's instructions.
Add-ins:
For various flavors, add to the food processor:
For Banana Soy Ice Cream, blend in 2 ripe bananas
For Strawberry Soy Ice Cream, blend in 12-16 frozen and partially thawed strawberries.
For Pineapple Soy Ice Cream, blend in 1 can or 1 cup of pineapple (well drained). You may want more sweetener.
For Ginger Soy Ice Cream, add either 1/4 cup preserved ginger or 1 to 2 inches grated fresh ginger (for preserved ginger, add to food processor so it gets ground up).

Use your imagination to come up with new flavors!

Flavored liquers or syrups are a great way to add punch. Try creme de menthe and chocolate chips, or coffee liqueur, or instant coffee powder...

btw don't get it twisted. I am NOT turning vegan. debwa still loves red meat. just incorporating (non-dairy, thanks lactose intolerence!) different things into the diet, that's all! (this lady doth not protest too much)

Below is a great, quick, analysis of lady gaga and how she adds to transphobia. (gudbuy t'jane, btw, is a great blog that's "a trans woman on gender, feminism, and glam rock (among other things)")

I really agree with a few of her points and think that the overall analysis is v. eloquent and dead on. one of her points that I think is v. insightful is that by putting transwomen and drag queens in her videos she is adding to the "exoticism" and sexualization of non-heteronormative people. well, she says it better, so read on peeps:

Yes, Lady Gaga, we get it. You can stop worrying that people think you’re a trans woman.

I’ve made no bones before about my lack of awe for Lady Gaga. It’s not that I have anything against her specifically, but I find the aggrandizement of her as a radically different feminist artist as shallow: she’s able-bodied, cis, blonde, thin, and conventionally attractive (I find the argument that she’s somehow shattering beauty norms really hard to swallow), and generally taking part in the privilege of attraction as western culture grants it.

As a trans woman, she mostly caught my attention due to the transphobic and intersex-phobic rumours about her being either trans or intersex. While these rumours were typically a product of living in a transphobic and transmisogynist culture, Lady Gaga’s response was one of gender and genital essentialism, stating that her vagina was offended by the claims.

It seems with her latest video she’s continuing this gender essentialism, slipping in a “no dick = not a tranny” joke at about a minute in, before the song even begins to play. The scene is set in a prison, and after being dragged to her cell and stripped by two women who appear to be trans Lady Gaga climbs up against the bars in a shot clearly designed to dispel any rumours. At that point one of the trans women guards says to the other “I told you she didn’t have a dick,” and they walk away.

When the original rumours about Lady Gaga’s genitals were circulating I stayed away from the story for the most part out of respect for her. Her offended vagina comment quickly lost my support, however. That she’s using trans women and drag queens to exoticize her videos doesn’t defer from the cissupremacist stance that women = vagina, and trans women are therefore not real women. Her anxiety at being seen as trans is clear, and her response is typical of cis privilege and trans marginalization: We’re supposed to wipe our brows and sigh relief that she’s actually a real woman. This is transmisogyny.

Okay so maybe I’m like 3 years behind on this one, but basically I think I’m in love. Her name is Stevie Ryan. AKA the "first queen of YouTube", she is known for her satirical skills and erm… ‘colorful’ fictional characters. One of the most notable, littleloca, is a chola (yes, as in lip liner, sharpie markers, bandannas and razor blades cholas) from East LA who, while being completely hilarious, has caused quite a bit of stir from viewers who call Stevie’s depiction racist and derogatory to Hispanic Americans. Whatever, they love it. In fact, most of Stevie’s characters are a bit risqué, from the pregnant Myspace celebrity Sceney Sceneable, to the barefoot hillbilly Jamie Lynn, to the Islands, a sort of guido-centric Jersey Shore parody, but I think that is a huge part of her charm. After all, debwa loves being inappropes.

Basically, there are a lot of really awful female comedians out there, and it’s sad to say that for most of them their looks are the only thing worse than their sense of humor (I’m talking to you Ellen, i don't care if you are a lesbian that's no excuse). Stevie Ryan manages to look gorgeous, even when dressing up as Pee Wee Herman (it is kind of sexy actually) but also has her own genuinely funny provocative and dark humor, without being Sarah Silverman #2.

i think this one is especially spot-on.

hellooooo... it's mid february and that means that sooner than you think we will want to be wearing shortie shorts and bikini tops. it also means that it's time to start thinking about getting rid of the winter coat, aka christmas/ thanksgiving/ cozy winter food extra ten pounds that you put on (but don't get me wrong, it keeps you warm!)in the colder months. i am going to invest my time and money in one thing and one thing only: Richard Simmons.

I really really like this artist's, Chloe Early, work. Her paintings from the collection(?) "clouded apollo" are a quite interesting mix of half-undone fantastical settings but then have pieces of great detail and her use of shadow and darker colors are so beautiful. I like the softness of some lines and the hard edges of others.

kd fantasy recently asked me what my stripper/burlesque/lap dance song would be and I was totally stumped. she said she really liked the lap dance song from deathproof but didn't want to choose it as it was already in a movie. I haven't seen it yet so she sent me the video and I instantly got an uber boner. for those of you who haven't seen it:

damn. girl works it. I never knew khaki shorts and flip flops could be so sexy. then I decided I wanted my song to be some old soul southern song.

So, we decided for your (our) pleasure, we would put together a top 5 stripper song list. feel free to add to it.

1) this song belongs in a dark room where everybody is drinking beers and maybe some of them are doing dope. this is the lap dance song of a girl who is supremely sexy and slightly fucked up (from drugs, not from life) and she is giving a dance to a dude in a room full of other dudes but only has eyes for her recipient.

2) this is a classic in dingy strip clubs in small towns (I'm guessing, as I've never been to a dingy strip club in a small town). this is the stripper dance of a white trash-y in her late 20s who kills it with this song despite being a mother of two where most of the audience is dads and one of them realizes the stripper was his daughters bff when they were in 5th grade.

3) it's not as cool as the oldies but it's a different vibe. this is the lap dance song of a slutty white hipster girl who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and all the rich girls want to be her friend but will never be as cool as she is. or as slutty. (well maybe as slutty).

4) this is what kd says about this one: this song makes me want to have a 70s party were everyone is a little stoned and makes out. this is the stripper song of a not-ghetto black girl who is cute and short and VERY curvy but owns it.

5) ahh, the cougar. according to mr jones, the cougar is "the most hunted animal of all the creatures." and if she was giving a lapdance, this is definitely what she would dance to.

stellarlullaby : Hopefully literary geniuses won't jump on me, but her philosophies amount to: If you aren't self-serving to the point of being a social outcast, you're fake. Charities isn't really worth it because charity isn't a "moral duty", people exist only for their own pleasure. Believe in nothing other than yourself, not government, not religion, nothing. Rational to the point where it's truly pedantic and stupid. FYI: They support the "Tea Party" movement and that the government shouldn't regulate anything, like even making sure medicine is safe and shit.

I always think it's stupid, I've read several of her books and it makes me a little upset each time. While I get that being an individual is important, but I think she takes it too far. She had some fucked up complex because she was Russian and her family was angry about having their wealth taken by commies (because they were well off while everyone around them was starving). In the end, she had a valid point that government shouldn't control speech like communist Russia, and while I understand why she left, I think she was one of those people who didn't understand a happy medium in government intervention.

Either way, I think she's a self-serving, bitter bitch and people who like her normally have no real view on life other than an incredibly sheltered one where they think her way of life would work. She's often reference by people who are argumentative and "unique" to the point of being asses. All the fans of her writing I've encountered have been the most aggravating, ignorant people, usually hipster kids trying to sound smart.

i really really am feeling the need to be crafty. i want to glue, sew, knit, bake, and then put glitter on everything. maybe it's withdraw now that i'm finished with my christmas panto (oh and i'm sort of broke). here are some seasonal craft sites that i'm into at the mo.

this snowflake curtain from Bugs and Fishes is amazing, but i doubt i will be able to produce that many paper snow flakes.

My mom has a bunch of these little paper houses from the 50s. They are very christmas kitsch. There is even a printable pattern here.

of course there about a million different christmas cookie recipes and decorating options, but these are an old classic my mom used to make. they are called chocolate crinkles and are a bit like mini brownies. I really like the look of the white powdery outside with the chocolate cracks showing through. how rustic.
(p.s. i also saw these on marthastewart.com and she added espresso to them and called them snow caps. fuck that, don't mess with a classic)

okay this is also another fantasy family classic and it's way fun to do (i think).
you need:
one or more potatoes depending on how many stamps you would like
paint in some festive colors
paper (new paper would work but i like plain brown paper - it should be cheap though, whatever you choose)
a sharp small knife, like an exact-o
a plate or something to put the paint on

1. cut the potato in half
2. draw a picture on the cut half of the potato to be your stamp
3. cut away the bits of the potato you do not want to be stamped so that your design is now '3-D'
4. squeeze out some paint in a puddle on your plate
5. dip the potato stamp in it and then decorate your paper!

Some punk are vegans, and some punks are not. Punks don’t care that much about food actually. Being punk is about making your body look good but not in the way SOCIETY thinks “good” is which is why a lot of punks have tattoos, piercings, and don’t care if they get fat. It’s true that normies have tats, piercings, and are fat, the difference is that they’re not making a statement about society while punks clearly are.

The Dixie Chicks: “What? They ain’t punk!” Again you’re wrong. The Dixie Chicks are punk as shit. They hate the government and people burned their cds because of it. I know another band that happened to, they were called EVERY PUNK BAND EVER.

Wearing whatever you want: You don’t need safety pins or anarchy buttons or bells or whistles to be a punk. I mean, if you want to dress like a stereotypical punk you can wear that shit, but my cousin is 8 and she was a “punk” for Halloween. She basically dressed like Gavin when he performs in 80s Hardcore. If you’re really punk you can dress like a meathead because you’re so punk that you don’t give a shit what people think about you. Real punks don’t need to be classified into groups or categorized in any scene. You can dress like a stockbroker or a drag queen, as long as your being truer to yourself than the man. Owning a few 7 inches doesn’t hurt though.

Listening to whatever you want even if it’s not punk music: Guess what Ian Mackaye’s favorite band is? The Shangri-La’s. Guess what Jello Biafra listened to before he played a show? Dolly Parton. Oh and Sam McPheeters from Born Against has a framed poster of Minnie Riperton hanging in his living room. None of these facts are actually true, but like, come on. They totally are. Punk kids obviously listen to punk and hardcore, but they listen to other stuff as well, including the pioneers of punk—Eric Clapton and John Lennon. JK!!!

Not having to get wasted to feel comfortable or talk to people: A lot of people think punks love to get wasted and sniff glue. That’s not true at all. Everyone loves to get wasted; it’s hardly original, and punks are about being original or at least not conforming to society’s rulez, like you have drink in order to feel comfortable. If you’re really punk, you’ll feel awkward or scared and just say ‘fuck it’ and ride it out, cuz punks love facing and conquering challenges. Punks love fear. True, I’m only saying this because I don’t drink, but I’m fucking punk. What do you expect?

Being nice to people: Old ladies are scared of punks because they think we will steal your purse and crash your party, but that’s just an old punk wives tale. Real punks are bff’s with old people, dogs, fat kids from high school, children, and other kinds social underdogs. Remember Duncan from Some Kind of Wonderful? Like that.

Sitting on the street: Punks don’t care about germs or getting dirty. They spill food and beer and mustard on themselves and it just blends in with their ‘tudes. Wanting everything to be clean is for snobs and thugs, two kinds of people that punks don’t mess around with.

Going to school: Punks like school because they like to know the ins and outs of knowledge. That way when a bully challenges them in mental way, they can be like “How do you like them apples?” Like Good Will Hunting, who incidentally happened to be punk as shit. BONG!

Contradicting themselves: Because punks don’t really believe in rules, all of the above things can be argued at any moment and the argument would be true too. Punks don’t like to follow a moral code or rules. They don’t even like the rule to not follow the rules.

I am super into this. I've been looking for new nails recently to feel inspired by (I recently tried to do a leopard print on my nails and failed enormously), and the ombre one (second pic) seems very attainable.

how to do the metallic look (aka the worst of the 3):

Get the Look

STEP 1 Lacquer nails with two coats of gunmetal (at left: CND Enamel in Hyde in the Dark). Allow at least five minutes for the polish to dry.

STEP 2 Sweep nail adhesive (at left: Kami Nail Foil adhesive) over the polish. It will change from white to clear matte when dry.

STEP 3 Place a strip of gold foil—shiny side facing down—(at left: Kami Metallic gold and silver foil) over your nail, tap three to four times with your fingertip to deposit the pigment, then peel off. Repeat with the silver foil.

how to do the ombre look:

Get the Look

STEP 1 Gather your materials: a deep purple polish (try OPI nail lacquer in Give Me Moor), a creamy white polish (like OPI nail lacquer in Alpine Snow), five clean pots (or disposable plates), and toothpicks to mix.

STEP 2 Pour out four dime-size blobs of the dark purple, and add small increments of white to each one, creating a gradation of hues.

STEP 3 Beginning with the original shade on your pinkie, paint each nail a different color.

how to do the black and white moon look:

Get the Look

STEP 1 Apply one coat of opaque white (at left: Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail color in Whirlwind White) over the entire nail and wait for the polish to dry completely.

STEP 2 Using a semicircular French-manicure stencil sticker (at left: Orly French Manicure Tip Guides), block off the bottom third of your nail.

STEP 3 Paint two coats of black (at left: Essie nail polish in Licorice) from the stencil to the tip of the nail. Once it dries, peel off the sticker and finish with a shine-enhancing top coat over the entire nail.
